What should you know about double hiccups?

A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm followed by a brief closure of the vocal cords. Eating quickly, swallowing air, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, excitement or stress can irritate the reflex involved. Repeated hiccups can also occur alongside acid reflux or gastritis, especially when there is burning discomfort, nausea or upper-abdominal pain.

The word double does not identify a specific disease. The pattern, duration and accompanying symptoms matter more than whether two spasms happen together.

Pause eating, sit upright, breathe slowly and take small sips of water. Avoid gulping, fizzy drinks and large meals until the episode settles. If reflux symptoms are frequent, keep a note of food triggers and discuss them with a clinician; do not start acid reflux medication without checking that it is suitable for you.

Arrange medical advice if hiccups keep returning, interfere with sleep or eating, or continue long enough to leave you exhausted. Seek urgent help for severe chest or abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, or breathing difficulty. A clinician can look for reflux, gastritis, medicine effects or a less common underlying problem.
