What should you know about a double-chin compression garment?

This garment may support tissues after an operation or help manage swelling beneath the chin and along the jaw. Pressure can limit fluid build-up and support movement of fluid through nearby drainage pathways. It should fit the intended area without pressing on the throat or making breathing, swallowing, or speaking difficult.

A garment is not a treatment for every lump or change under the chin. A new, growing, painful, or firm swelling needs clinical assessment before compression is started.

Use the size, design, and wearing schedule recommended by your surgeon, nurse, or lymphoedema therapist. Put it on smoothly so there are no folded edges, wrinkles, or concentrated pressure points. Check the skin under the chin and around the straps each time it is removed, and keep the garment clean according to its care instructions.

Stop and contact the treating team if it causes numbness, tingling, throbbing, skin breakdown, headache, or increasing swelling. Do not tighten it to speed up improvement.

Remove the garment and seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, choking, sudden facial or neck swelling, faintness, or blue lips. Contact your clinical team promptly for fever, spreading redness, drainage from a wound, severe pain, or swelling that worsens while wearing it. These signs can indicate a problem that compression cannot safely manage.

Ask whether compression is appropriate for the cause of your swelling, which garment and pressure are suitable, how long to wear it, and how to wash it. Ask who should check the fit, what skin changes matter, and when swelling should be reassessed.
