Doppler growth scan: what to know

The sonographer measures the baby’s head, abdomen and thigh bone, estimates growth and checks amniotic fluid. Doppler ultrasound adds information about blood moving through vessels such as the umbilical artery and, when needed, other maternal or fetal vessels. These patterns help clinicians consider how the placenta is working and whether the baby may need closer monitoring. A result is interpreted alongside gestational age, your history, fetal movement and earlier scans; one measurement does not provide a complete diagnosis.

Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen and bring your maternity notes if requested. Follow the clinic’s instructions about eating, drinking and timing. The scan uses gel and an abdominal probe; pressure can be uncomfortable but should not be severe. Ask when the report will be discussed and whether you need another scan, blood-flow check or antenatal review.

A scan appointment does not replace urgent advice. Contact your maternity unit promptly for reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, vision changes or sudden swelling. Follow the team’s instructions quickly if the Doppler or growth findings lead to extra monitoring.

Ask which growth measurements were taken, which blood vessels were assessed, how the findings compare with earlier scans, and what symptoms or results would change the monitoring plan.
