What should you know about donkey fever?

People may use donkey fever informally for a fever occurring after contact with a donkey, or for an infection they associate with that contact. The word alone cannot identify the cause. Fever can accompany common respiratory illnesses, skin infections, or infections acquired from animals, and the correct explanation depends on the whole pattern.

Tell the clinician when the fever began, whether the animal was ill, and whether you had a bite, scratch, kick, wound contamination, or contact with saliva, urine, faeces, or respiratory secretions. Mention travel, farm work, pregnancy, immune conditions, and medicines because these details can change the assessment.

Measure your temperature with a reliable thermometer and note chills, cough, breathing symptoms, rash, diarrhoea, vomiting, joint pain, or pain at any wound. Rest, drink fluids, and avoid alcohol while you are unwell. Wash any animal-related wound with soap and running water and cover it with a clean dressing.

Arrange medical advice if fever persists, returns, or follows a significant animal exposure. Do not start leftover antibiotics or give human medicines to the animal. If several people became ill after the same setting, tell the clinician and the relevant animal-health service.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, confusion, a seizure, severe dehydration, a rapidly spreading rash, a painful swollen wound, or marked weakness. A child who is unusually sleepy, difficult to wake, or not drinking needs prompt assessment. Fever with worsening symptoms after a bite or contaminated wound also warrants urgent review.

Ask which examinations or tests may clarify the cause, whether the wound needs additional care, how to manage fever safely, and whether anyone else exposed to the animal should be assessed.
