Short answer

DOMS after running causes delayed aching or stiffness in worked muscles; reduce impact, keep movement gentle, and return to running in stages.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common triggers
New distance, pace, hills, terrain, or running load.
Return cue
Walking and basic leg movements feel comfortable without a changed stride.

What may be behind the ache

A longer route, faster pace, hills, trails, or a change in running surface can challenge muscles more than expected. DOMS commonly feels like a broad ache or stiffness in the calves, thighs, hamstrings, or buttocks, particularly when walking downstairs or rising from a chair. It should gradually ease as normal movement returns. Pain that is pinpointed, sharp, associated with a pop, or focused around a joint is less characteristic of DOMS and may indicate a muscle strain or another running injury. Training history and footwear are useful details to share during an assessment.

Recovery and return to running

Replace running with easy walking or gentle cross-training if those activities are comfortable. Move the ankles, knees, and hips through an easy range, but do not force a painful stretch. A warm shower can be soothing for general stiffness, while a protected cool pack may calm a specific irritated area. Avoid hill repeats, speed work, and long runs until ordinary walking is comfortable. Restart with an easy, shorter run and build gradually, stopping if pain changes your stride or becomes sharper. Sports massage may feel helpful, but deep treatment is not suitable over a swollen or injured area.

When to seek assessment

Get medical advice for severe pain, pronounced swelling, weakness, numbness, fever, dark urine, or inability to walk normally. Seek prompt care after a fall, twist, or direct impact. A persistent or recurring problem deserves review by a clinician or physiotherapist, who can assess running load, strength, mobility, and technique.

Questions to bring

Ask whether the symptoms fit DOMS or a muscle strain, when to resume running, which surfaces or workouts to avoid temporarily, and whether hot and cold therapy or sports massage is appropriate.

Questions people ask

Should I run through DOMS?

Avoid hard running while soreness changes your stride; choose easy movement only if it remains comfortable.

How is an injury different from running soreness?

A sharp, localised pain, pop, swelling, bruising, or sudden weakness is less typical of DOMS and merits assessment.
