Does whiplash cause neck stiffness?

Stiffness may make turning your head, looking over your shoulder, or bending your neck uncomfortable. It can occur with soreness, reduced movement, headache, or pain spreading towards the shoulders. Symptoms may become clearer over the hours after an injury rather than appearing immediately. Neck stiffness has many possible causes, so the symptom alone does not identify whiplash.

Keep the neck gently moving within a comfortable range instead of holding it completely still for long periods. Use an ice pack wrapped in cloth soon after an injury if it eases soreness; later, gentle warmth may feel more comfortable. Follow the label for any pain medicine and check with a clinician or pharmacist if you have other conditions or take regular medicines. Arrange an assessment if pain or movement problems are not settling.

Seek urgent medical help after a neck injury if you develop weakness, numbness, tingling in an arm or leg, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe headache, confusion, or difficulty breathing. Prompt assessment is also sensible when pain is severe, the neck looks abnormal, or symptoms followed a high-impact collision.

Ask whether your movement and nerve function need checking, which activities are safe while you recover, and whether physiotherapy could help restore comfortable neck movement. Tell the clinician when the injury happened, how it occurred, and whether symptoms are improving or changing.
