Does Hives Cause Skin Rash?

Hives, also called urticaria, are temporary areas of swelling in the skin. Individual welts may be pink, red, or close to your usual skin tone. They can be small or merge into larger patches, and itching is common. A welt may fade while another appears elsewhere, so the rash can seem to move. Pressure, heat, cold, infection, medicines, foods, or contact with a trigger can bring on an episode, although a clear trigger is not always found.

Hives are different from a rash that stays fixed in one place and becomes scaly or blistered. A clinician may need to examine the skin to distinguish hives from other causes of skin rash, especially when the appearance changes over time.

Keep the skin cool with a cool, damp cloth and choose loose clothing. Avoid scratching, hot showers, and any suspected trigger until you have medical advice. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether an antihistamine is suitable for you, taking into account your age, pregnancy or breastfeeding, health conditions, and other medicines. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without guidance, even if you wonder whether it caused the welts.

Arrange medical advice if the episodes keep returning, last longer than expected, interfere with sleep, or leave bruising or pain. Take a clear photograph when the rash is visible, because hives may have faded by the appointment.

Seek emergency help immediately if hives occur with swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat; trouble breathing or swallowing; wheezing; faintness; confusion; or a sudden feeling of becoming very unwell. These features can signal a serious allergic reaction. Do not wait to see whether the skin settles.

Prompt medical assessment is also appropriate when a rash is accompanied by fever, significant pain, blistering, skin peeling, or sores involving the eyes or mouth. Those features are not typical of simple hives and may need a different evaluation.
