Does urodynamic testing treat overactive bladder?

Urodynamic tests examine pressure, bladder capacity, urine flow and coordination between the bladder and sphincter. A clinician may recommend testing when symptoms are unclear, treatments have not helped, or another bladder problem needs consideration. The test itself is diagnostic rather than a therapy.

Overactive bladder commonly involves urgency, frequent urination or waking to urinate, with or without leakage. Results can show whether symptoms fit involuntary bladder contractions or suggest a different pattern. Symptoms and test findings do not always match perfectly, so your history remains part of the assessment.

Ask what question the test is intended to answer and how its result could change your plan. Treatment may include bladder training, pelvic floor support, fluid and caffeine adjustments, medicines or other options selected with your clinician. Keep a bladder diary if requested, recording drinks, toilet visits, urgency and leakage.

Follow preparation instructions, including any advice about medicines or arriving with a comfortably full bladder. Tell the team about pregnancy, urinary infection symptoms or difficulty passing urine before testing.

Contact a clinician promptly for blood in the urine, fever, burning with urination, new inability to pass urine or severe lower abdominal pain. These symptoms may need assessment for infection, blockage or another problem rather than routine overactive bladder care.

Ask which measurements will be taken, whether the test is necessary now, how discomfort will be managed, and which results would alter treatment. Ask when you can expect an explanation of the findings.
