Does urine test treat benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called an enlarged prostate, can narrow the tube that carries urine from the bladder. This may cause a weak stream, difficulty starting, urgency, or waking at night to urinate. A urine sample can look for signs of a urinary infection, blood, glucose, or other clues that symptoms have another cause. It cannot shrink the prostate or open the narrowed passage.

A clinician may combine the result with your symptom history, an examination, and other checks. A normal result does not by itself explain every urinary symptom.

Arrange a medical assessment if urinary changes persist, interfere with sleep, or make it difficult to empty your bladder. Treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia may involve monitoring, lifestyle adjustments, or prescribed medicines; the choice depends on symptom severity and your health. Do not take leftover antibiotics based only on urinary symptoms. Bring a list of medicines and note changes in stream strength, urgency, night-time urination, and whether you feel fully emptied.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, have severe lower abdominal pain, see substantial blood in the urine, or develop fever with shaking chills and worsening urinary symptoms. These signs can need prompt assessment and are not explained by a urine test alone.

Ask what the urine test is checking, whether your symptoms fit benign prostatic hyperplasia, and which treatment could improve your stream or bladder emptying. Also ask how quickly to return if symptoms worsen and whether another examination is needed.
