Does typhoid fever cause diarrhoea?

Typhoid fever is an infection that can affect the digestive system. Loose or watery stools may occur alongside fever, tiredness, headache, stomach discomfort, nausea, or reduced appetite. Some people instead develop constipation, so bowel changes vary. Other infections, contaminated food or water, medicines, and inflammatory bowel conditions can also cause diarrhoea. A clinician considers the whole pattern, travel or food exposure, examination findings, and appropriate tests before diagnosing typhoid fever.

Drink frequent small amounts of safe fluids. Oral rehydration solution can replace water and salts lost through loose stools; follow the product instructions. Eat light foods if you feel able, and wash your hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food. Arrange prompt medical advice if typhoid fever is possible, especially after travel or exposure to unsafe food or water. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the correct medicine depends on the diagnosis and local resistance patterns.

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in the stool, or a persistent high fever. These signs can indicate dehydration or a more serious illness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a weakened immune system may need earlier assessment.
