Does transient ischaemic attack cause slurred speech?

A transient ischaemic attack can briefly affect brain areas involved in speech and movement. Speech may sound unclear, slow, or difficult to understand; a person may also struggle to find words or understand language. Facial weakness, arm weakness, numbness, vision disturbance, or loss of balance can occur at the same time. Alcohol, medicines, low blood sugar, migraine, and other problems can also alter speech, so urgent assessment is needed to find the cause.

If speech suddenly becomes slurred, call emergency services and record when it started. Keep the person safe, do not give food or drink if swallowing is affected, and do not drive to hospital. Explain any accompanying weakness, facial change, confusion, or vision problem. Symptoms that clear before help arrives still require assessment because a TIA may precede a stroke.

Treat sudden slurred speech as an emergency, especially with facial drooping, weakness on one side, new numbness, severe dizziness, vision loss, confusion, or a severe headache. Call again or remain under medical care if symptoms fluctuate. Do not wait to see whether speech returns to normal.
