Does hydroquinone treatment treat hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation describes areas that look darker because the skin has made or retained extra melanin. Hydroquinone works locally on pigment formation, so it may gradually soften the appearance of selected brown or grey-brown marks. It does not identify or remove the cause of the colour change, and not every dark area responds in the same way.

The diagnosis matters because darkening can follow acne, irritation, injury, sun exposure, medication, or another skin condition. A cream that irritates the skin may make colour more noticeable, particularly in deeper skin tones. Treatment around delicate areas also needs extra care.

Arrange a dermatology assessment before starting or restarting hydroquinone, especially when the patches are new, spreading, itchy, scaly, or limited to one unusual spot. Use it only as directed, apply it to the intended pigmented skin, and avoid eyes, lips, and broken skin. Gentle cleansing and daily broad-spectrum sun protection help reduce further darkening while the skin is being treated.

Improvement is gradual rather than immediate. Your clinician may recommend a defined course, a break, or another option if the skin becomes irritated or the colour does not fit ordinary hyperpigmentation. Do not combine multiple lightening products without guidance.

Stop applying the product and seek medical advice if you develop marked burning, swelling, blistering, severe redness, or a rash that continues after you wash it off. Arrange an assessment for a spot that bleeds, crusts, changes quickly, or has an irregular border; those features need diagnosis rather than cosmetic lightening.
