Do topical corticosteroids treat lichen simplex chronicus?

Lichen simplex chronicus is scratch-thickened skin. Repeated rubbing or scratching makes the area feel itchier and can make its surface leathery, rough, or darker than nearby skin. A corticosteroid applied to the affected skin can reduce inflammation and itching, making it easier to avoid scratching. It does not remove the habit or the trigger by itself, so treatment may also involve moisturising, covering the area at night, and addressing an underlying irritation, dryness, or stress-related scratching.

Use the prescribed product in the amount and pattern your clinician gives you, and apply it only to the intended area. Wash gently, pat dry, then moisturise regularly to reduce dryness and friction. Keep nails short and try a cool compress when an urge to scratch starts. Avoid extending treatment to thin-skinned areas such as the face, skin folds, or genitals unless specifically instructed. A stronger product or longer course is not automatically better; repeated unsupervised use can thin skin or cause other local changes.

Arrange a review if the patch keeps enlarging, returns soon after treatment, bleeds, becomes painful, develops crusting or drainage, or does not improve as expected. A clinician may need to check for infection, contact irritation, psoriasis, or another cause of persistent itch. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness with fever, marked swelling, or facial swelling with breathing difficulty.

Ask which strength and application schedule suit the body site, how long to continue after the itch settles, and what moisturiser or anti-itch strategy can help prevent scratching. Ask whether an ongoing trigger, infection, or another skin condition needs assessment.
