Do topical corticosteroids treat insect bites?

An insect bite can trigger a local inflammatory reaction, leaving a raised, itchy spot or several bumps. A corticosteroid dampens that inflammation; it does not remove a retained stinger, treat every possible infection, or prevent a future bite. The right choice depends on the bite, the location, the person's age, and whether the skin is broken. Scratching can enlarge the reaction and damage the skin barrier.

Wash the area gently, use a cool compress, and avoid scratching. Keep fingernails short and protect broken skin with a clean dressing. If advised to use a corticosteroid, apply it sparingly to intact affected skin and follow the label or clinician's instructions. Avoid applying it near the eyes, mouth, or genitals unless specifically directed. A pharmacist or clinician can help when a reaction is extensive, recurrent, or affecting a child.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, dizziness, widespread hives, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Arrange prompt assessment for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, pus, red streaks, or swelling near the eye. A bite that does not settle, looks unusual, or follows travel may need a different diagnosis and treatment.

Ask whether the reaction looks like a simple bite response, whether the skin is suitable for a corticosteroid, and what signs would suggest infection or allergy. Ask how to protect the area from further bites.
