Does topical corticosteroids treat bed bug bites?

Bed bug bites can cause itchy red bumps or patches, and some reactions appear later rather than immediately. A topical corticosteroid reduces inflammation in the skin, which may make the reaction less itchy and uncomfortable while it settles. It treats the skin response, not the infestation. Continued bites can occur if bed bugs remain in bedding, furniture, clothing or nearby areas.

Seek medical advice if bites become increasingly painful, warm, swollen, crusted or filled with pus, or if redness spreads. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a widespread rapidly developing reaction. Arrange an assessment when the rash persists despite removing the suspected exposure, affects a young child or pregnant person, or does not resemble the usual pattern of an itchy bite.
