Does tinea versicolor cause scaly skin?

The scale associated with tinea versicolor is usually fine and dry rather than thick. It may be easier to notice when the patch is gently scratched or rubbed. The underlying area can be lighter, darker, pink, or tan than nearby skin. Patches often develop on the chest, back, shoulders, neck, or upper arms, and the surface may feel slightly rough. Mild itch can occur, but a lack of itch does not rule it out.

Ask a clinician to assess persistent scaling before starting repeated treatments, because eczema, psoriasis, irritation, and other conditions can also cause flakes. When tinea versicolor is diagnosed, follow the recommended antifungal instructions and cover the areas advised. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, which can irritate the skin without removing the cause. Wear breathable clothing, change out of damp clothes, and allow the skin to dry after sweating. Colour differences may remain after the scale has cleared.

Arrange a review if scale is thick, cracked, bleeding, painful, spreading quickly, or associated with marked redness or swelling. Seek prompt care for fever, pus, or a rapidly worsening rash. If appropriate treatment does not improve the scaling, the diagnosis may need to be reconsidered.
