Does thyroid removal surgery help with a neck lump?

Thyroid removal surgery, also called thyroidectomy, removes part or all of the thyroid gland. It may reduce a visible or pressing lump when the thyroid is enlarged, contains a concerning nodule, or contains cancer that should be removed. Surgery may also be considered when a benign growth causes pressure or swallowing problems.

It will not treat every neck lump. A lump from an infection, salivary gland, lymph node, or other tissue needs a different assessment and treatment. Examination and imaging help identify the source before an operation is planned.

Ask an endocrinology or surgical team what is causing the lump and whether observation, a needle sample, or surgery is the next step. Discuss whether part or all of the thyroid would be removed, expected scar care, thyroid hormone replacement, and follow-up testing. Tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding and any previous neck operations.

Before or after assessment, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, or sudden voice change. After surgery, urgent review is also needed for heavy bleeding, severe neck swelling, or tingling and muscle spasms that may signal a calcium problem.
