Testing usually includes thyroid-stimulating hormone and may include free thyroid hormone levels. A result pattern can support a diagnosis of an underactive thyroid, but symptoms, medical history, examination, and medicines are considered alongside the blood test.

When hypothyroidism is confirmed, treatment commonly uses a prescribed thyroid hormone replacement medicine. The test helps establish whether the dose is suitable over time. It does not supply thyroid hormone, repair the thyroid, or make symptoms disappear by itself.

Discuss the result with a clinician before starting, stopping, or changing thyroid medicine.
