Does thyroid cancer cause hoarse voice?

Thyroid cancer may also occur with a neck lump, throat pressure, difficulty swallowing, cough, or noisy breathing. Hoarseness is more often related to causes such as infection, reflux, voice strain, or irritation, and the symptom by itself cannot establish a diagnosis. A persistent change is assessed by its timing, associated symptoms, and examination of the neck and voice box.

Arrange a clinical appointment if hoarseness persists, recurs, or appears with a thyroid or neck swelling. The clinician may feel the thyroid and neck, check the voice, and refer you for a camera examination of the voice box or imaging when appropriate. Rest your voice, avoid smoke, and mention any previous neck surgery or thyroid problems.

Seek emergency help for sudden or severe breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, or rapidly enlarging neck swelling. Prompt review is needed for worsening hoarseness with noisy breathing, coughing blood, or increasing difficulty swallowing.

Ask whether your thyroid and vocal cords need examination, what other explanations should be considered, and whether you need imaging or specialist review. Record when the voice change began and whether it varies with speaking, illness, swallowing, or lying down.
