Does threadworms cause abdominal pain?

Threadworms live in the bowel. Irritation from the worms can cause tummy discomfort, nausea, reduced appetite, or unsettled sleep. Itching around the anus, often worse at night, is a more recognisable feature, and small white worms may sometimes be seen around the area or in stool.

Abdominal pain can also result from constipation, infection, food intolerance, or other bowel problems. The location, severity, timing, bowel changes, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician work out what is happening.

Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before eating. Keep fingernails short, discourage nail biting, and wash sleepwear, underwear, towels, and bedding regularly. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on treatment and whether household members need advice. Follow the product instructions and avoid sharing medicines.

For pain, encourage fluids and simple foods if tolerated. Do not assume that every episode of abdominal pain is caused by threadworms, particularly if there is no night-time itching or other typical feature.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, blood in stool or vomit, fainting, or marked sleepiness. Arrange medical advice for persistent pain, fever, poor drinking, or symptoms in a very young child.
