Does TENS therapy help with lower back pain?

Short answer
TENS therapy may help some people manage lower back pain for a limited time.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main role
- Temporary symptom relief for some people
- Needs guidance
- Pad placement and suitability depend on your health and symptoms
What TENS does
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation uses a small device and adhesive pads placed on the skin. Mild electrical pulses create a tingling sensation and may change how pain signals are processed. Relief varies between people and may wear off after the device is switched off. TENS is a symptom-management tool, not a way to identify or correct the cause of lower back pain. A suitable plan may also include movement, strengthening, sleep support, and changes to activities that aggravate symptoms.
Using it thoughtfully
Ask a clinician or physiotherapist to show you pad placement, settings, and safe use for your symptoms. Do not place pads over broken or irritated skin, the front of the neck, or across the chest. Keep the device away from water and remove it before sleeping unless a professional has specifically advised otherwise. Tell the clinician if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced skin sensation, or are pregnant, because TENS may not be suitable in every situation.
When back pain needs review
Seek medical assessment if pain is persistent, worsening, follows an injury, or limits ordinary movement despite self-care. Get urgent help for new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, severe or progressive leg weakness, fever with back pain, or unexplained illness. TENS should not delay assessment of these warning signs.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether TENS fits your pain pattern, where the pads should go, and what other treatment should accompany it. Ask which symptoms mean you should stop using the device and seek review.

Questions people ask
Will TENS cure lower back pain?
No. It may reduce pain temporarily, but it does not address every underlying cause.
Can I use TENS while moving?
Follow the device instructions and professional advice; remove it if movement, sweat, or pad position makes the skin uncomfortable.
