Does swimmer's ear cause earache?

Swimmer's ear, also called outer ear infection, affects the skin lining the canal. Pain may become sharper when the outer ear is touched, pulled, or moved while chewing. The canal can look red or swollen, and fluid or discharge may appear. Tenderness, itchiness, or a blocked sensation can occur alongside the ache. Water trapped after swimming, scratching the canal, or using objects inside the ear can irritate its protective lining.

Keep the ear dry and avoid swimming until symptoms settle or a clinician advises otherwise. Do not place cotton buds, fingers, oils, or non-prescribed drops into the canal. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain relief and examine the ear before recommending drops, especially if there could be a damaged eardrum. Follow prescribed drops for the full advised course and keep the bottle tip from touching the ear.

Arrange medical assessment if pain is strong, worsening, or not easing, or if discharge, fever, marked swelling, or reduced hearing develops. Seek prompt care for swelling spreading around the ear, severe pain with illness, dizziness, or facial weakness. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or previous ear surgery should seek advice early because outer ear problems may need closer monitoring.
