Short answer

Peeling Skin is a very common presentation of Sunburn as the body sheds surface cells damaged by ultraviolet exposure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why peeling happens

After a sunburn, injured surface cells lose their normal structure and are gradually shed. The skin may feel tight, dry, itchy or tender before flakes become visible. Peeling can occur in sheets or fine scales, and the new skin underneath may look pink or feel more sensitive for a while.

Dryness, eczema, irritation from products and some infections can also cause flaking. If peeling occurs without recent sun exposure, keeps returning or affects unusual areas, another explanation may need checking.

How to support recovery

Cool the skin gently, use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser, and drink fluids if you are able. Do not pull, scrub or exfoliate peeling skin, since this can create raw areas and delay repair. Wear loose clothing over affected areas and keep them out of direct sun. Stop products that sting, including fragranced lotions or strong exfoliants, until the surface feels settled.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician if the burn is blistered over a large area, pain is severe, or the skin becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen or produces pus. Get prompt help for fever, chills, dizziness, vomiting, confusion or difficulty drinking. Assessment is also sensible when peeling does not improve, repeatedly returns, or follows a product exposure rather than sunlight.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which moisturiser is suitable, whether the peeling is consistent with sunburn, and when you can restart your usual skin products. Describe the timing of the burn, any blisters, and whether the area is painful, itchy or leaking fluid.

Questions people ask

Should I remove peeling skin?

No. Let loose skin shed naturally and moisturise the area without pulling or exfoliating it.

Will peeling leave sensitive skin?

The newly exposed skin can be tender or more sun-sensitive while it repairs, so cover it and avoid direct sunlight.
