Does sunburn cause skin blisters?

Sunburn causes redness, heat, tenderness and sometimes swelling. Blisters are pockets of fluid that form as the injured skin separates slightly. They can be small or larger, intact or already open. Blistered sunburn needs extra protection because the surface barrier is weakened and rubbing can worsen pain or allow germs into the skin.

Other problems, including allergic reactions, infections and contact burns, can also produce blisters. The pattern, timing and accompanying symptoms help a clinician work out the cause.

Move out of direct sun, cool the area gently with a clean damp cloth, and drink fluids if you are able. Leave blisters intact; do not peel the loose skin or puncture them. Cover the area loosely with a clean non-stick dressing if clothing rubs against it. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain relief for you. Keep applying sun protection to unaffected skin and avoid further exposure until healing.

Seek medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, fever, chills, dizziness, vomiting, confusion or signs of dehydration. Get prompt help if blisters become increasingly red, warm, swollen, foul-smelling or drain pus. Children, older adults and people with significant medical conditions may need earlier assessment after a blistering burn.

Ask how to dress the area, which pain relief is suitable, and whether an open blister shows signs of infection. Tell the clinician when the exposure happened, how long the skin was in the sun, and whether you have fever or feel faint.
