Does a stye cause red eye?

A stye often causes a small, tender red bump at the eyelid edge. The surrounding eyelid may look puffy, and the white of the eye can become mildly bloodshot or watery. Redness that stays concentrated near the lump is more consistent with local eyelid irritation.

Redness across much of the eye, strong itch, thick discharge, or symptoms affecting both eyes can have other causes. The appearance of redness cannot confirm the cause on its own.

Clean your hands, then place a clean warm compress over the closed eyelid for several minutes. Repeat this through the day and keep the compress comfortably warm rather than hot. Gently clean away any crust with clean water.

Avoid rubbing the eye, squeezing the lump, wearing contact lenses, or using eye makeup while the eyelid is irritated. Replace or wash items that touch the eye, and ask a pharmacist or clinician before using medicated drops.

Seek urgent help for reduced vision, severe pain, light sensitivity, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, or redness spreading into the cheek. Immediate assessment is also needed if eye movement is painful or difficult.

Arrange a medical review if the redness is worsening, the lump does not settle, or styes keep returning. A clinician can check whether the eyelid or the surface of the eye needs different treatment.
