Does strep throat cause swollen glands?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils. Nearby lymph nodes can enlarge and feel sore as the immune system responds. The swelling is often felt under the jaw or along the sides of the neck, and it may occur with a painful sore throat, fever, red tonsils, or patches on the tonsils.

Swollen lymph nodes can also accompany viral throat infections and other illnesses, so the symptom alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may assess your throat and perform a swab or other test before recommending treatment.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Warm liquids or salt-water gargles may soothe the throat. Use a suitable pain or fever medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician.

Arrange a medical assessment if a strep infection is possible, particularly with fever, marked throat pain, tender neck nodes, or no cough. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not share them. Stay home until a clinician advises that returning to close contact is appropriate.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe one-sided throat swelling, a muffled voice, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can signal a complication requiring prompt treatment.

Contact a clinician if swollen glands persist, continue enlarging, become hard or fixed, or occur with unexplained weight loss or night sweats. A clinician can examine the nodes and decide whether further evaluation is needed.
