Does strep throat cause fever?

Fever is part of the body's response to infection. With strep throat, it may appear alongside a suddenly painful throat, pain when swallowing, red or swollen tonsils, and sometimes white patches or a fine rash. Many other infections can also cause fever, so fever by itself cannot establish that the infection is caused by streptococcal bacteria.

A clinician may look at the throat, check the neck, and ask about cough, runny nose, exposure, and the timing of symptoms. Testing can help distinguish strep throat from other causes when the examination does not provide enough information.

Rest and take regular fluids, using small sips if swallowing hurts. Wear light clothing, avoid strenuous activity, and use age-appropriate pain or fever medicine only as directed by a clinician or pharmacist. Do not share drinks or utensils, and wash hands frequently. If testing confirms strep throat, follow the prescribed treatment exactly.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, severe dehydration, confusion, a seizure, or a rapidly spreading rash. Contact a clinician when fever is persistent, symptoms are getting worse, or throat pain prevents adequate drinking. Children, older adults, and people with weakened immunity may need earlier advice.
