Does STI screening treat syphilis?

Syphilis screening commonly uses a blood sample. A clinician interprets the result alongside your symptoms, past treatment, and possible exposure. Some results need additional testing to distinguish a current infection from an earlier one or to guide follow-up.

Syphilis can cause a painless sore, a rash, swollen glands, or later nerve, eye, or other organ problems, but symptoms may be absent or easy to miss. Screening identifies a need for assessment; it does not kill the bacteria or prevent transmission by itself.

Arrange a clinician review for a positive or unclear result. Treatment is selected according to the stage of infection, your medical history, allergies, and pregnancy status. Complete the prescribed course or injections and attend follow-up appointments, even if the sore or rash improves.

Avoid sexual contact until your clinician confirms it is appropriate, and ensure partners receive confidential advice. Ask about testing for other STIs. Do not use antibiotics without medical guidance, because the wrong medicine or timing may not treat syphilis adequately.

Seek prompt care for a new genital, anal, or mouth sore, a spreading rash, or a positive result. Get urgent assessment for eye pain or vision change, severe headache, weakness, confusion, hearing change, or pregnancy with possible exposure.

Ask whether the result suggests current infection, what treatment and follow-up are needed, whether partners should attend, when sex can resume, and whether the eyes or nervous system need assessment.
