Does shoulder reduction treat shoulder dislocation?

A shoulder dislocation happens when the ball at the top of the upper arm moves out of the shoulder socket. Reduction is a clinician-performed procedure that returns the joint to alignment. The clinician may use a gentle technique and pain relief or sedation, depending on the injury and the person’s needs. Imaging may be needed before or after the procedure to look for a fracture or confirm the joint position. Returning the joint does not repair every stretched or torn soft tissue, and a shoulder that has dislocated can need protection and rehabilitation afterward.

Keep the arm supported as instructed and avoid trying to move the shoulder back into place yourself. Follow the prescribed plan for pain relief, movement, and physiotherapy. Early exercises may focus on the hand, wrist, and elbow while the shoulder is protected; later work can restore shoulder movement and strengthen the muscles that help control the joint. Attend follow-up appointments so the clinician can reassess stability, nerve function, and any associated bone or soft-tissue injury. Do not return to lifting, contact activity, or overhead movements until you have been given specific clearance.

A suspected dislocation needs urgent medical assessment, especially when the shoulder looks out of place, movement is severely limited, or pain began after a fall or impact. Seek emergency help for a cold, pale, blue, or numb hand; new weakness; worsening swelling; uncontrolled pain; or an arm that remains visibly out of position. After reduction, return promptly if the shoulder appears to slip out again, pain suddenly increases, or numbness or weakness develops. These signs can indicate nerve, blood-vessel, bone, or joint problems that need prompt review.

Ask what type of dislocation occurred, whether imaging showed a fracture, and how long the shoulder should be supported. Clarify which movements are safe now, when physiotherapy should begin, and which symptoms should trigger an urgent review.
