Short answer

Heel Pain is a common presentation of Sever's Disease because repeated loading can irritate the growing area at the back of the heel.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Impact activities commonly make symptoms more noticeable.

Why the heel becomes painful

Sever's disease affects the growth area where the Achilles tendon attaches near the heel. During growth, repeated running and jumping can place traction on this sensitive area. Pain may be felt at the back or underside of the heel, and squeezing the heel or pushing off during walking can be uncomfortable. A child may limp after sport or avoid activities that involve impact.

The symptom can resemble other causes of heel pain, including injury or irritation of nearby tissues. A focused examination helps assess the location, walking pattern and tenderness. The description alone does not confirm the diagnosis.

Ways to settle symptoms

Temporarily reduce activities that trigger pain, especially repeated sprinting and jumping. Choose comfortable shoes with cushioning and consider a heel insert if a clinician recommends one. Gentle calf flexibility work may be useful when it remains comfortable.

Return to impact activity in stages rather than testing the heel with a full training session. Keep a simple note of pain during activity and the following morning, and arrange physiotherapy advice if the child cannot maintain normal movement.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment for ongoing pain, a limp, reduced walking, pain after a clear injury or symptoms that interfere with school or sport. Seek prompt care for severe swelling, redness, fever, numbness or inability to bear weight, as these signs may point to another problem.

Questions for your doctor

Does the tenderness fit Sever's disease? How much activity should be reduced, and when can impact exercise resume? Would heel cushioning or a stretching programme help?

Questions people ask

Can Sever's disease affect both heels?

Yes. Symptoms may occur on one side or both sides, and the more painful side can change with activity.

Should heel pain always be treated with complete rest?

Not always. Reducing painful impact and maintaining comfortable movement is often more practical than complete inactivity.
