Does sciatica cause leg numbness and tingling?

Sciatica can affect a nerve root as it leaves the lower spine. Along with pain, this may produce pins and needles, reduced feeling, burning, or an altered sense of touch in the buttock, thigh, calf, or foot. The exact area depends on the nerve involved. Symptoms may change with sitting, bending, coughing, or certain leg positions. Other nerve, circulation, or metabolic problems can also cause numbness, so the pattern and examination matter.

Protect numb areas from burns, cuts, and pressure because reduced sensation can make an injury harder to notice. Change position regularly and keep activity gentle if it does not worsen symptoms. Avoid forcing stretches or lifting while symptoms are irritable. Arrange an assessment if numbness persists, spreads, affects walking, or comes with weakness; a clinician can test sensation, reflexes, strength, and nerve tension.

Seek emergency care for new difficulty starting or controlling urination, loss of bowel control, numbness around the genitals or anus, or severe or rapidly worsening weakness in both legs.
