Does scabies cause itchy skin?

Scabies is caused by tiny mites that enter the outer layer of skin. The itch is an immune reaction to the mite and its material, so it can continue even after the mites have been treated. Small bumps, scratch marks, or thin burrow-like lines may appear, commonly between the fingers, around the wrists, at the waist, or on other areas where skin touches skin. Itchy skin has many possible causes, so itching alone cannot identify scabies.

Arrange a medical assessment if the pattern, timing, or spread makes scabies possible. Use the prescribed scabies treatment exactly as directed, including the stated application area and timing. People who share a household or have close skin contact may need assessment together, because untreated contacts can pass mites back and forth. Wash or isolate recently used clothing, towels, and bedding according to the clinician’s instructions. Keep fingernails short and use gentle skin care to reduce damage from scratching.

Seek prompt medical care if scratching has caused open sores, increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, or worsening pain, as these can signal a skin infection. Get urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, or a rapidly spreading severe reaction. If itching continues after treatment, contact the prescriber rather than repeating doses or adding products on your own; the skin may remain irritated, or another condition may be present.
