Does rubella cause joint pain?

Rubella is a viral infection that may begin with mild fever, tiredness, a fine rash, or tender swollen glands behind the ears and at the back of the neck. Aching or swollen-feeling joints can occur during the illness and may be more noticeable in the hands, wrists, knees, or ankles. The discomfort may continue for a short time as the infection settles. Many other viral illnesses, medication effects, injuries, and inflammatory conditions can also cause joint pain, so this symptom does not confirm rubella. A clinician may consider your rash, exposure history, vaccination history, examination findings, and appropriate testing together.

Rest when you feel unwell, drink fluids, and use gentle movement if it does not increase pain or swelling. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain-relief option is suitable for you, especially if you are pregnant, have liver or kidney disease, take regular medicines, or are caring for a child. Avoid close contact with people who may be pregnant until a clinician advises you about possible rubella, because infection during pregnancy can seriously affect an unborn baby. Do not share towels or drinking vessels, and arrange medical advice if a rash and joint symptoms appear together.

Contact a clinician promptly if you develop a rash with fever, swollen glands, or joint pain, or if you may have been exposed to rubella. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, confusion, a severe headache with neck stiffness, marked weakness, or a rapidly worsening illness. If you are pregnant or could be pregnant and have a new rash or possible exposure, contact your maternity or healthcare team promptly, even if symptoms are mild. Persistent, very swollen, hot, or severely painful joints also need assessment.
