Does radiofrequency ablation help with lower back pain?

A clinician uses image guidance to place a probe near selected nerves that carry pain from spinal facet joints. Radiofrequency energy heats the nerve tissue and reduces its ability to transmit pain signals. The procedure targets pain communication; it does not repair a disc, straighten the spine, or remove pressure from a nerve root. It is therefore more suitable for a carefully identified pain pattern than for every type of back pain.

Assessment usually includes your pain location, movements that aggravate it, neurological symptoms, examination findings, and relevant scans. A temporary diagnostic nerve block may be used before ablation to see whether the suspected nerves are contributing. Tell the treating team about medicines, bleeding problems, infection, allergies, pregnancy, and implanted devices. Ask how to prepare, what activity is sensible afterward, and how physiotherapy or strengthening will support longer-term back function.

Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, or rapidly worsening leg weakness. After a procedure, seek prompt advice for fever, increasing redness or drainage at the treatment site, severe new weakness, or pain that is escalating rather than settling.
