Does psoriasis cause scaly skin?

Psoriasis speeds the renewal of skin cells, so cells can collect before the surface has shed normally. This creates rough, raised plaques with dry scale that may look white, silvery, grey, or darker than nearby skin depending on skin tone and location. Scale may itch, flake onto clothing, or become thick on the scalp, elbows, knees, palms, or soles.

Scaly skin can also result from dry weather, eczema, irritation, or fungal infection. Scale by itself cannot confirm psoriasis; a clinician looks at its pattern, thickness, distribution, and accompanying inflammation.

Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser or ointment regularly, especially after lukewarm bathing. Give scale time to soften and loosen; do not scrape, pick, or pull it away because that can irritate or break the skin. Use gentle shampoo for scalp involvement and avoid abrasive brushes. Prescribed treatments may target inflammation and scale separately, so follow the directions for each product.

Book a review if scale is thick, painful, limiting movement, affecting sleep, or returning despite your care plan. Tell the clinician about scalp, nail, or joint symptoms as well.

Seek prompt assessment if scaling is accompanied by rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, severe pain, or fever. Urgent care is needed for sudden widespread shedding, blistering, marked weakness, or involvement of the eyes or mouth.

Ask how to soften and remove scale safely, which treatment belongs on each body site, and whether your symptoms suggest psoriasis or another condition. Mention fissures, bleeding, nail changes, scalp symptoms, and joint stiffness.
