Does psoriasis cause peeling skin?

Psoriasis can produce raised patches covered by loose, dry flakes. Peeling may be fine and powdery or occur in larger attached pieces. It can be more noticeable after bathing, scratching, or rubbing clothing against a plaque. The skin underneath may look pink, red, darker, or tender depending on your natural skin tone and the degree of inflammation.

Peeling alone does not identify its cause. Eczema, irritation, sun injury, fungal infection, and reactions to products can also shed skin. A clinician uses the pattern, location, symptoms, and examination to distinguish these possibilities.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser or ointment regularly, especially after a short lukewarm wash. Let loose flakes come away gently; do not scrape, pick, or use abrasive tools. Choose soft clothing and avoid products that burn or dry the area. If a prescribed medicine is part of your plan, apply it as directed rather than increasing it to remove flakes faster.

If peeling covers a large area, affects the palms or soles, or keeps returning despite careful moisturising, arrange a dermatology review. Treatment may need to address both inflammation and excess scale.

Seek prompt help for rapidly spreading peeling, severe tenderness, fever, chills, marked swelling, pus, or skin that becomes hot and increasingly red. Urgent assessment is appropriate if much of the body sheds suddenly, if you feel faint or unwell, or if eye, mouth, or genital skin is involved.

Ask whether the peeling pattern matches psoriasis, how to soften scale safely, which moisturiser is suitable, and whether your treatment plan needs changing. Tell them about new products, medicines, pain, bleeding, or sudden spread.
