Does psoriasis cause dry skin?

Psoriasis speeds up the skin-cell cycle in affected areas, creating thickened plaques covered by dry scale. The skin may feel rough, tight, sore, or itchy, and cracks can develop where plaques bend or rub. Dryness can worsen after hot showers, cold weather, low humidity, or fragranced products. Dry skin also has many other causes, so dryness alone does not establish a psoriasis diagnosis.

Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after a short lukewarm shower while the skin is still slightly damp. Pat rather than rub, and choose soft breathable clothing over rough fabrics. Do not peel scale or scratch plaques, because small injuries can aggravate psoriasis. A dermatologist can tailor treatment to the location, thickness, and extent of the plaques.

Arrange an assessment for persistent scaly patches, painful cracks, bleeding, or symptoms that interfere with sleep or movement. Seek prompt advice if many areas suddenly worsen, the skin becomes very red and tender, or joint pain and morning stiffness accompany the rash. Fever or feeling acutely unwell with a widespread flare needs urgent care.
