Does prostatitis cause painful urination?

The discomfort may be felt at the tip of the penis, along the urinary passage, or deeper in the pelvis. Prostatitis can also occur with needing to pass urine often, a sudden urge, a weak stream, difficulty starting, or pain in the lower back or area between the scrotum and anus. Fever, chills, or feeling unwell can suggest a more sudden inflammatory or infectious illness. Painful urination has other possible causes, including a urinary tract infection, so the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a medical assessment if painful urination persists, returns, or comes with pelvic discomfort or changes in your urine. A clinician may ask when the pain began, examine you, and test a urine sample. Share any fever, discharge, blood in the urine, recent urinary procedures, or difficulty emptying your bladder. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed; do not start leftover antibiotics, because the cause and suitable treatment need to be assessed.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, develop a high fever or shaking chills, become confused or very weak, or have severe worsening pelvic or lower-back pain. These signs can occur with a significant infection or urinary blockage and need prompt assessment. If you feel suddenly very unwell, use local emergency services.
