Does prostatitis cause frequent urination?

Inflammation in or around the prostate can irritate the lower urinary tract, creating an urge to urinate more often, including during the night. You may also notice urgency, burning, a weak stream, difficulty starting, pelvic pressure or pain with ejaculation. Infection-related prostatitis may cause fever and chills, while longer-lasting symptoms may come and go.

Frequent urination has other possible explanations, including urinary infection, diabetes, excess fluid or caffeine, bladder irritation and prostate enlargement. The number of visits alone does not identify the cause. A clinician may ask about fluid intake, sleep, pain, fever and the amount of urine passed, then arrange urine testing or other checks.

Arrange a medical review if frequent urination is new, persistent or accompanied by burning, pelvic pain, fever or a changed stream. Keep a short record of drinks, bathroom visits, urgency and related symptoms. Avoid cutting fluids severely, and follow your clinician's advice about caffeine, alcohol and prescribed medicines.

Seek urgent care if frequent urination comes with fever and chills, severe pelvic or back pain, vomiting, confusion, faintness or inability to pass urine. Blood in urine or rapidly worsening symptoms also deserve prompt assessment.
