Does prostate cancer cause persistent bone pain?

Prostate cancer can spread to bone and cause a deep ache, tenderness, or pain that stays in one area. It may be felt in the back, hips, pelvis, ribs, or thighs and can be worse at night or with movement. Bone pain has many possible causes, including injury, arthritis, or other conditions, so the symptom alone cannot identify its cause.

A clinician may ask when the pain began, whether it is changing, and whether you have urinary symptoms, tiredness, weakness, or unexplained weight change. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests, and scans when appropriate.

Arrange a medical assessment for persistent, unexplained, or worsening bone pain, especially if you have known prostate cancer. Keep a simple record of the location, pattern, triggers, and effect on sleep or movement. Do not start or stop pain medicine without checking that it is suitable for you, particularly if you have kidney, stomach, or heart problems.

Seek urgent care for new leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain with difficulty walking. These symptoms can signal pressure on nerves or the spinal cord and need prompt assessment. Get immediate help for a sudden inability to move, a serious fall, or pain that becomes rapidly severe.

Ask what may be causing the pain, whether imaging is needed, and which pain-relief options fit your health history. If prostate cancer is known, ask whether the pattern suggests bone involvement and how it would affect the treatment plan.
