Does preterm labour cause braxton hicks contractions?

Short answer
Braxton Hicks Contractions is a common presentation of Preterm Labour. However, contractions called Braxton Hicks can also occur as normal practice tightenings, so their pattern and accompanying symptoms need attention.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Practice pattern
- Often irregular and may ease with rest or a position change
- Concerning change
- Tightenings that persist, become regular, or occur with other symptoms
Understanding the difference
Practice contractions are often irregular, uncomfortable rather than increasingly painful, and may ease after rest, hydration, or a change of activity. Preterm labour can involve tightenings that become regular, stronger, closer together, or continue despite these measures. It may also bring lower-back pain, pelvic pressure, period-like cramps, a change in vaginal discharge, bleeding, or fluid leakage. Feeling contractions alone cannot establish the cause; a maternity assessment may be needed.
Steps to take
Pause activity and rest on your side. Drink fluids if permitted, and time the start and end of each tightening for a while. Notice whether the contractions settle or continue and whether any fluid, blood, pressure, or pain appears. Call your maternity unit for advice when contractions are new, repetitive, or occurring before term. Follow the team’s instructions rather than waiting for them to become severe.
When to seek urgent help
Contact maternity services urgently for regular or painful tightenings, fluid leakage, vaginal bleeding, persistent backache, pelvic pressure, fever, or reduced fetal movement. Go for immediate assessment if pain is severe, symptoms are rapidly worsening, or you feel faint or seriously unwell. Clinicians can assess the cervix, contractions, membranes, infection, and fetal wellbeing.
Questions for your doctor
How should I time contractions? Which pattern should prompt a call? Could my recent activity, hydration, or examination affect the tightenings? What should I do if they return overnight?
