Does prediabetes cause excessive thirst?

Prediabetes means blood glucose is higher than the usual range but has not reached the diagnostic range for diabetes. Changes in glucose handling can affect fluid balance and make some people feel unusually thirsty. Thirst may also follow heat, exercise, salty food, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, dry mouth, or medicines. Because symptoms alone cannot identify the cause, a blood test is needed. Depending on your history, a clinician may discuss glucose testing, kidney function, medicines, and other explanations.

Keep water available and note how much you drink, how often you urinate, and whether you have dry mouth, tiredness, or blurred vision. Book an appointment if thirst persists, is new, or is affecting sleep and daily activities. Bring a list of medicines and supplements. Do not try to diagnose prediabetes with home symptoms alone. If testing confirms prediabetes, a clinician can discuss eating patterns, activity, weight goals when relevant, and follow-up suited to you.

Seek urgent medical care if intense thirst comes with repeated vomiting, severe weakness, confusion, drowsiness, fast or deep breathing, abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms can signal a serious glucose or fluid problem. Get prompt advice as well if you are urinating much more than usual and becoming dehydrated.
