Does polyp removal treat bowel polyps?

During a colonoscopy, a clinician may remove a bowel polyp with a snare or another instrument. The tissue is sent for examination because its type, size, number, and completeness of removal help guide what happens next. Removing a precancerous polyp can prevent that specific polyp from developing further, but it does not remove polyps that were not found or prevent every new polyp. A broad-based, very large, or difficult-to-reach growth may require a different procedure or specialist planning.

Ask whether the polyp was removed completely and when the tissue result will be explained. Keep the recommended follow-up appointment even if you feel well, because surveillance checks for new or remaining growths.
