Does sun-damaged skin cause easy bruising?

Sun-damaged skin may lose some of its thickness and resilience over time. Small knocks can then damage tiny blood vessels beneath the surface more easily, leaving purple, red, or brown marks. Bruises often appear on exposed areas such as the backs of the hands and forearms. Easy bruising can also relate to medicines, nutritional problems, platelet or clotting conditions, or another skin process, so the pattern and timing matter. The symptom alone cannot establish the cause.

Use sun protection and cover exposed skin when outdoors. Reduce avoidable knocks, handle delicate areas gently, and moisturise if the skin is dry or easily cracked. Keep a list of medicines and supplements, including products that affect clotting, and do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. A clinician can review new bruises, examine the skin, and decide whether blood tests or a medication review is appropriate.

Arrange medical review when bruises appear without a clear injury, become more frequent, are unusually large, or occur with nosebleeds, bleeding gums, blood in urine or stool, marked tiredness, or fever. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe weakness, confusion, or a rapidly expanding painful bruise.

Ask whether the bruising pattern fits fragile sun-damaged skin, whether any medicine or supplement may contribute, which warning signs to monitor, and whether testing is needed.
