Does PGT-M treat recurrent miscarriage?

PGT-M tests embryos created through IVF for a specified inherited condition caused by a change in one gene or a small group of genes. It may be relevant when testing has identified a genetic condition that can affect pregnancy development and may contribute to repeated loss. The test does not treat the uterus, repair an embryo, or explain miscarriages caused by other factors.

Recurrent miscarriage can have more than one possible explanation, including chromosome changes that arise in an embryo, uterine factors, hormonal or medical conditions, and inherited disorders. A genetics and fertility assessment helps distinguish these possibilities before choosing a test.

Ask your clinician whether pregnancy-tissue testing, parental genetic testing, uterine assessment or other evaluation could clarify the pattern of loss. If a specific inherited condition is found, a genetics team can explain inheritance and whether a laboratory can design PGT-M. Discuss IVF requirements, alternatives, and whether pregnancy testing would still be advised after transfer.

During a suspected miscarriage, seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, faintness, shoulder pain, fever or feeling acutely unwell. One-sided pain with dizziness needs emergency assessment. These symptoms require care regardless of whether PGT-M is being considered, because they can signal blood loss, infection or an ectopic pregnancy.

Ask whether a known gene condition could explain the miscarriages and what evidence supports that possibility. Ask what tests both partners need, whether PGT-M can target the finding, what results mean, and which non-genetic causes should be assessed alongside it.
