Short answer

Restless Legs is a common presentation of Peripheral Neuropathy, but the two conditions can also occur separately.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the symptoms can overlap

Peripheral neuropathy may create burning, crawling, prickling or painful sensations in the legs. Restless legs syndrome usually involves an uncomfortable urge to move that begins or worsens during rest, particularly in the evening, and eases temporarily with movement. Nerve symptoms may be present during the day and may not improve with walking. Iron deficiency, kidney disease, pregnancy, medicines and other factors can contribute to restless legs, so a careful history helps distinguish the patterns.

Steps that may help

Track when the sensation appears, whether movement relieves it, and whether numbness, burning or weakness occurs at the same time. Arrange a clinical review if sleep or daily activity is affected. The clinician may examine sensation and reflexes, review medicines, and consider tests for iron levels, blood sugar or other contributors. Regular sleep habits, gentle stretching and moderate daytime activity may help some people; avoid starting iron or other supplements without advice.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for sudden one-sided weakness or numbness, a swollen painful leg, chest pain or breathlessness. Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly worsening weakness, repeated falls, a new loss of bladder control, or symptoms that become constant rather than appearing mainly at rest. These signs need assessment for causes other than a usual restless-legs pattern.

Useful questions

Ask whether your symptoms fit restless legs, peripheral neuropathy or both; whether iron or other tests are appropriate; and which medicines or lifestyle measures are safe. Describe the time of day, the urge to move, relief from movement, and any changes in sensation or strength.
