Does periorbital hyperpigmentation cause dark circles?

Periorbital hyperpigmentation can create brown, grey, or deepened colour around one or both eyes. The thin skin in this region makes changes in pigment and underlying structures easier to see. Genetics, repeated rubbing from eczema or allergies, sun exposure, and irritation can contribute. Dark circles may also look stronger when the under-eye has a hollow or casts a shadow, so visible darkness does not always come from pigment alone.
