Does peptic ulcer cause indigestion?

Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, is a group of symptoms rather than one diagnosis. It can include discomfort in the upper abdomen, early fullness during meals, bloating, nausea, belching, or a burning feeling. A peptic ulcer can cause this pattern because the sore irritates the lining of the stomach or duodenum.

The same symptoms can occur with reflux, medication irritation, gallbladder conditions, or functional digestive disorders. Indigestion does not identify its own cause. A clinician can review the duration, triggers, medicines, previous digestive problems, and any alarm symptoms to guide investigation.

Arrange a medical review when indigestion persists, recurs, or affects normal eating. Make a note of where you feel discomfort, whether it occurs before or after food, and any vomiting, weight change, swallowing difficulty, or bowel changes. Take a complete medicine list, including anti-inflammatory pain medicines and non-prescription products.

Testing may include checking for Helicobacter pylori. Some people need an upper digestive tract camera examination, especially when the clinical assessment finds symptoms that require a closer look.

Seek urgent medical care for vomiting blood, black tar-like stools, severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, repeated vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms require prompt assessment and should not be managed as routine indigestion.
