Does panic disorder cause numbness and tingling?

Short answer
Numbness and Tingling is a common presentation of Panic Disorder and may accompany rapid breathing during an attack.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Tingling may occur around the mouth or in the hands and feet.
- Breathing
- Fast or deep breathing can intensify the sensation during panic.
Why it can happen
During panic, fear can make breathing faster or deeper than usual. This shifts the balance of gases in the blood and may cause tingling around the mouth, in the hands, or in the feet. Fingers may feel tight or numb, and the sensation can be alarming. Panic-related tingling often appears with other alarm symptoms such as trembling, dizziness, sweating, or a racing heartbeat. Numbness and tingling also have other possible explanations, including pressure on a nerve, migraine, diabetes, vitamin problems, or circulation and neurological conditions.
What to do during an episode
Move to a safe place and let your shoulders and jaw relax. Breathe quietly and comfortably, allowing the exhale to last a little longer; avoid deliberately breathing into a paper bag. Change position if a limb has been compressed, and note how long the sensation lasts and whether it follows a panic trigger. If episodes recur, a clinician can review the pattern, examine you, and decide whether tests or panic-focused treatment are appropriate.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for sudden numbness or weakness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe headache, loss of balance, or fainting. Seek prompt assessment if the sensation is new, persistent, spreading, or unrelated to anxiety, or if it occurs with chest pain or severe breathing difficulty. These features need medical evaluation rather than being assumed to be panic.
Questions for your doctor
Could a nerve, blood sugar, vitamin, or medicine issue explain this sensation? Does its timing fit panic-related breathing changes? Which warning signs should make me seek urgent care?
