Does pancreatitis cause vomiting?

Pancreatic inflammation can disrupt digestion and irritate nearby tissues. This may produce nausea, retching, and vomiting, sometimes together with pain that travels towards the back. Vomiting can also result from a stomach infection, medication, bowel blockage, gallbladder disease, or another abdominal illness. Because these causes need different care, vomiting should be interpreted alongside the pain pattern, fever, bowel symptoms, and ability to drink.

Take tiny sips of water or oral rehydration fluid when you can, rather than trying to drink a large amount at once. Rest, avoid alcohol, and do not force solid food while active vomiting continues. Once fluids stay down, follow the advice given by your clinician about eating. Do not use leftover prescription medicine or anti-inflammatory pain relief without checking that it is suitable for you.

Arrange urgent assessment for repeated vomiting, severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, yellow eyes, fainting, confusion, or breathing difficulty. Go for emergency help if you vomit blood, develop a swollen or rigid abdomen, collapse, or cannot retain fluids. Reduced urination, a very dry mouth, and worsening dizziness are signs that dehydration may be becoming significant.

Ask what is most likely causing the vomiting, whether you need blood tests or imaging, and which symptoms mean you should return immediately. Discuss a safe fluid plan, when to restart food, and whether prescribed anti-sickness treatment is appropriate.
